Background
Fecal occult blood means there a small amount of gastrointestinal bleeding. Red blood cell is digested and destroyed. There is no abnormal change of the feces appearance. Naked eye and microscope all cannot confirm the bleeding. Because of that, they usually use immunization to go on the occult blood experiment to testify the hemoglobin in the feces. It is used to detect the multiply reasons causing the gastrointestinal bleeding and is a early screening of alimentary canal malignancy.
Clinical Significance
1.Postive FOB can be seen in many digestive system disease, such as peptic ulcer, acute gastric mucosal damage (the most common is drug-induced damage like aspirin, indometacin and glucocorticold and alcohol stimulates), intestinal tuberculosis, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis(UC), ancylostomiasis, all kinds of hemacelinosis purpura, hemophilia, alimentary canal malignancy(such as gastric cancer and colon cancer)
2.It is used to judge the alimentary canal malignancy and peptic ulcer: the occult blood tests of the former mostly remain positive and the latter soften the symptom of discontinuously positive because of the pills. Thus, whether the occult blood test stays positive or not can be the early screening and test of gastrointestinal tumors for elder people.
3.It is used to judge whether the bleeding stops or not: If a person defecates once a day, the color of his feces will recover in about 2-3 days after the first bleeding. However, the occult blood test can show positive result in 3-5 days. It is a reliable index of bleeding termite that when FOB test show negative. It estimates th bleeding completely stops.
