Background
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a glycoprotein secreted by trophoblastic cells of the placenta.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is synthesized by syncytiotrophoblast cells.
With a molecular weight of 36,700, the α subunit is similar to FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone) and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) secreted by the pituitary gland, so it can cross-react with each other, while the structure of β subunit is not similar.
The structure of β-HCG is similar to that of β-LH, but the last 24 amino acid extensions are not present in β-LH.
Clinical Significance
The examination of HCG is of great significance for the diagnosis of early pregnancy, as well as for the diagnosis, differentiation and course observation of pregnancy-related diseases and trophoblastic tumors.
1. Diagnosis of early pregnancy: HCG can rise to more than 2500 mIU/mL 35~50 days after pregnancy.
Up to 80000 mIU/mL in 60~70 days, urine HCG of multiple pregnancies is often higher than that of one pregnancy.

4. Menopause, ovulation and bilateral oophorectomy can lead to the increase of luteinizing hormone, and the same composition of peptide chain between LH and HCG leads to the positive pregnancy test with anti-hcg antibody, which can be identified by monoclonal two-point enzyme immunoassay of ~HCG.
Endocrine diseases such as pituitary diseases, hyperthyroidism, gynecological diseases such as ovarian cyst, uterine cancer and other HCG can also increase.
