Background
NT-proBNP is an accompanied product during the process of the BNP secretion of cardiac ventricle. In the normal human body, bioactive BNP and non-bioactive NT NT-proBNP is the products of a prohormone called proBNP while its dissociation stimulated by myocardial cell.
BNP and another matter ANP which secreted by heart and atrium work together to adjust the balance of water sodium metabolism in human body and to maintain the blood pressure.
Clinical Significance
In the clinical diagnosis, BNP become a more direct index than ANP in the diagnosis of ventricular dysfunction because it is secreted by atrium directly. However, the half-life period of BNP is only about 20 minutes, which will influence the results of clinical diagnosis. Thus, in the actual operation, choosing NT-proBNP whose half-life period is 60-120 minutes will highly increase the accuracy of the experiment result.
The level of NT-proBNP in plasma increase as the degree of heed failure increases.
NT-proBNP helps to distinguish it is cardiogenic dyspnea or not.
